The 3,500 lb machines made of metal and glass that we drive around our city are dangerous enough, but the people operating them can be the real threat. Not every driver is calm and good-natured, many are angry, anxious, ready to explode at any moment. As injury lawyers in Greenville, we know road rage is as threatening as any car accident, and road rage incidents are on the rise.
Last week, AAA Greenville released a statement that said instances of road rage have increased dramatically Upstate. If you follow the news, you’re probably not surprised as there have been recent cases here in our city where motorists have pulled guns on one another.
One of these instances involved a gun being pulled on a man who was driving his ATV on the road. The situation quickly escalated when the ATV rider drew his own weapon. In another case, the simple act of honking a horn in a Lowe’s parking lot ended with a man pointing a gun at another driver.
According to a AAA spokesperson, “We’ve kind of been seeing it more, I believe. You don’t have control over anybody else. The only thing you have control over is how you react to situations, and if they’re trying to start a fight, they have to have someone to start a fight with.”
In their statement, AAA also mentioned some of the most common causes of road rage including:
- Cutting another motorist off
- Driving too slow
Of course, none of these are reasons for threats or violence, and those that hurt others in road rage incidents should pay for their crimes.
