There is an unfortunate trend happening in our state when it comes to DUI-related traffic deaths. Recently released data shows South Carolina now leads the nation in the percentage of vehicular crash deaths caused by drunk drivers. The most recent data comes from 2013, and although there were 13 fewer DUI-related deaths in 2013 than in 2012, 44% of deaths in our state were caused by a drunk driver while the national average was 31%.
While the state saw a decrease of 11% in overall traffic deaths, the number of DUI deaths only went down 4%. Any improvement is good, but as we are still leading the nation in the number of DUI-related traffic deaths, there is still great progress to be made. MADD South Carolina Program Director Steven Burritt said:
Improvements aren’t being made fast enough, and it’s a shame that we lead the nation in such devastating circumstances. It forces us to ask ourselves as a state once again whether we’re doing everything we know we should to drive these numbers down. We know the answer is that we are not.
At Harris & Graves, we are Columbia car accident lawyers who understand the importance of driving sober. We also realize it is often an innocent victim of another vehicle or even a pedestrian who is hurt or killed when someone decides to drive while intoxicated. If you or a family member was a victim of a traffic crash caused by a drunk driver, we encourage you to contact us. No matter the level of injury to you or your family member, we will work to make sure the drunk driver is held responsible for his or her actions.
