Columbia Car Accident Attorneys Encourage Distraction-Free Driving

In our fast-paced world, people often attempt to multitask. While multitasking works great at times, multitasking while driving leads to distracted driving. Unfortunately, distracted driving can lead to car wrecks, some of which result in fatalities. While not all driving distraction can be completely eliminated, there are several things you can do to avoid becoming a distracted driver.

  • Put down the cell phone. Although it is legal to talk on your phone while driving in South Carolina, texting and driving is illegal. If you choose to talk on your phone while driving, limit the length of calls, and avoid talking on your phone if road conditions make it unsafe.
  • Focus mentally on the road. One of the keys to having a distraction-free driving experience is making sure your mind is on driving. Spacing out or daydreaming while driving happens, particularly when taking a long trip. If you find your mind wandering while you are driving, you can pull over and stretch your legs, take a few deep breaths, or mentally refocus. On long road trips, you may also need to switch drivers or pull off and take a nap or sleep for the night.
  • Have everything adjusted before starting your vehicle. Adjust your mirrors. Fix your seat. Move the steering wheel, if needed. Then you will not have to fix these things while driving. Also, be careful about changing radio stations while driving, particularly if changing the station will take your eyes off the road.
  • Do not get fixated by outside-of-your-vehicle distractions. Rubbernecking to see the crash on the side of the road may result in another crash. Looking around to decide whose car is making a strange sound can prevent you from seeing the brake lights of the car in front of you. If your attention is drawn to things outside of your vehicle, quickly bring your attention back to the road ahead.

Unfortunately, not everyone understands the importance of distraction-free driving. If you are the victim of a car accident caused by another driver being distracted, our Columbia car accident attorneys can help you. Contact us to find out what we can do for you.
